How to draw a root 2 rectangle, or the Golden Rectangle.

Step 1

Start by drawing a square.  I have chosen to use dotted lines to express all root values.

Step 2

Pin your compass at the lower left hand side of the square.  Take your compass and measure it to the upper right corner of the square.

Step 3

With your compass anchored strike and arc from the top of the upper right hand corner.

Step 4

With your ruler extend the two parallel or top and bottom lines of your box.

Step 5

Erase the circle leaving only the interior lines.

Root--rectangle

Step 6

Erase the arc.

Root--rectangle

Step 7

Now you have your root 2 rectangle.
